The place situated over a rock land was established primarily in three parts, i.e. Citadel with fortified walls and bastions and a place covering a large rectangular area with high rubble walls is located in the western direction. Northers direction was developed as the city; in present condition the site can be marked as ruins of houses. The site is considered as a landmark in architectural development of Tughlaq period.

The Mausoleum of Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq is linked by a causeway to the southern outpost of the fortification.

The walls of the fortification made up of granite, the sides of the mausoleum are faced by smooth red sandstone and inlaid with inscribed panels and arch borders from marble. The edifice is topped by an elegant dome resting on an octagonal drum that is covered with white slabs of marble and slate.

Tughluqabad still consists of remarkable, massive stone fortifications that surround the irregular ground plan of the city. The city is supposed to once have had as many as 52 gates of which only 13 remain today.
